About
A draft artist statement for the first website version.
Michael W. Beckner’s paintings begin with recognizable subjects—houses, city streets, birds, flowers, and figures—but use color and fractured form to move beyond description.
The work explores how places and images remain in memory: vivid, incomplete, and emotionally charged. Architecture becomes a container for belonging and absence; animals, flowers, and figures become signs of movement, ceremony, and transformation. Through layering, revision, and improvisation, observation and imagination occupy the same painted space.
